Celebrating EITC Awareness Day
January 25, 2019, is the thirteenth annual Earned Income Tax Assistance (EITC) Awareness Day. This day offers an opportunity for cities in MONTANA to come together with community organizations, schools, employers and other partners to increase awareness of the EITC and other tax credits.
It also offers city leaders the opportunity for city to connect with, celebrate and encourage their residents to access free tax filing services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
In 2018, more than $159M was accessed by eligible workers and families in our state and nearly $63 billion nationwide.
Each year, these dollars provide an economic jolt for businesses within our communities and increase the financial stability of families.
EITC Awareness Day is an effort by the IRS to increase the number of individuals that claim the EITC on their tax returns.
Many families do not even realize they are eligible to receive this refund.
According to the IRS, one in five eligible individuals does not claim the EITC, potentially leaving hundreds or thousands of dollars on the table that could be used to pay bills and purchase necessities for their families. If claimed, these EITC returns could inject millions of dollars into the local economy.
That’s why the National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education, and Families (YEF Institute) has created a guide for EITC Awareness Day to help city leaders connect with VITA partners and raise residents’ awareness of the EITC by celebrating EITC Awareness Day. The guide can be found here.
We hope you will join us in celebrating the EITC on January 25 and raise awareness of this important
economic development tool for the cities and residents in our state. -
