A. GENERAL CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Provides general security services to maintain the orderly and efficient operations of Municipal court.  Provides security for judicial personnel, jury, and witnesses and to control defendants or other persons in the courtroom.

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (70%):
Note:  It is expected that every employee should be on time, fully prepared, every day that the employee is scheduled to work.  
The following duties are typical for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
a. Conducts a physical inspection of the courtroom for security prior to and at the end of each court session and secures the courtroom when not in session.
b. Monitors and conducts daily inspections of all security equipment such as duress alarms, fire alarms, telephone/intercoms, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.
c. Inspects and searches persons and personal effects for weapons at the direction of the Judge, assists in seating court participants and spectators.
d. Opens and closes court, announces entry of judge, and maintains order in the courtroom.
e. Enforces courtroom rules of behavior and issues warnings as needed.
f. Intervenes and handles any disturbances, emergencies, or special requests of the Judge.
g. Transfers documents to the bench, jurors, and counsel.
h. Takes custody of defendants in the courtroom and transports to the correctional facility.
i. Enforces orders of contempt, secures defendant and assists in processing contempt expeditiously for transfer of defendant to jail personnel for booking.
j. Assists in verifying warrants against defendants on docket for pending cases.
k. Coordinates Order of Protection service and warrant service with sworn law enforcement staff.  

C. PERIPHERAL DUTIES (30%):
a. Assists KPD officers/administrators.
b. Other duties as assigned by the Chief with the input of the Judge.
c. Enforces and investigates municipal ordinance violations.
d. Maintains departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities.

D. SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works directly under the supervision of the Administrative Captain.

E. SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

F. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
a. High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and/or experience required.
b. Prior experience in courtroom preferred.
c. Must be 18 years or older.
d. Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Montana driver’s license; applicants driving history will be taken into consideration.
e. U.S. citizen.
f. Must be able to read and write the English language.
g. Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.

G. NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA’s):
a. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, court procedures.
b. Skilled in basic computer operation.
c. Ability to learn the layout of the property and buildings.
d. Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.
e. Physically able to capture and detain individuals if necessary.
f. Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
g. Knowledge and use of firearms and modern police equipment.
h. Ability to:
i. Communicate effectively verbally (authoritatively) and in writing.
ii. Operate personal computers, mobile radio, phone, copy and fax machine.
iii. Prepare and maintain clear, concise, and accurate documentation, records, correspondence, and follow up reports.
iv. Safely operate motor vehicles, at times in congested traffic, and safely operate other tools and equipment related to the position.
v. Act courteously and with sound judgment in tense situations.
vi. Exercise sound judgment within established guidelines and supervisory direction.
vii. Analyze situations and determine appropriate courses of action.
viii. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, public, and other governmental agencies.
ix. Ability to discharge firearms in a safe and efficient manner.

H. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Personal computer, motor vehicle, multi-line phone, mobile radio, fax and copy machine. Handgun and other weapons as required, baton, handcuffs, breathalyzer, pager, computer, electronic devices, and first aid equipment.

d. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

J. WORK ENVIRONMENT:

b. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
c. Shift Schedule:  Normally is from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday with ½ hour for lunch.  Times may vary slightly based on the needs of the City.
