Salary: $23.02 hour

A. GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Recreation Superintendent, organizes, coordinates, and supervises recreational programming for all ages, including aquatics programs, enrichment programs and workshops, and special events. This position also assists with youth programs, sports/wellness programs, and special events. Work varies, requiring self-initiative, interpretive judgment and decision making. Work often requires working nontraditional hours including early mornings, occasional evenings, and weekends.
B. SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Superintendent.
C. SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Supervises seasonal recreation employees and volunteers with varied responsibilities and skills, examples: aquatics staff, specialty instructors, and recreation program aids. Provides guidance, training, instruction, and technical assistance needed for recreational programing, aquatics operations, enrichment programs, and other recreation staff.
D. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Note: It is expected that every employee should be on time, fully prepared, every day that they are scheduled to work. We expect employees to strive for perfect attendance. Due to the demands of programs on this position, scheduled hours and days worked will be varied. Some evening and weekend shifts will be required based on programming and special events. The City reserves the right to change work schedules and duties based on the needs of the City.
General (30%)
a. Researches, develops, and implements recreation activities, programs, and workshops.
b. Assists in the supervision of employees and volunteers within all program areas.
c. Receives and acts upon inquiries, complaints; following incident protocols and responds to emergency calls at any time.
d. Completes site visits to evaluate facilities, staff, and participants to determine public needs and how to increase efficiency and value.
e. Assists or conducts preparation of budget estimates and activity reports.
f. Utilizes recreation program management and point of sale software.
g. Prepares activity reports and assists with preparation of annual program budgets.
h. Assists with developing digital and print media to promote programs and provide community awareness.
i. Engages in frequent contacts with the public and fellow employees, requiring considerable tactfulness, diplomacy, and communication skills.
j. Serves as a member of various employee and community committees, as assigned.
k. Assists with procurement of services and supplies as needed along with administrative duties pertaining to programs.
l. Works with the Recreation Superintendent to implement program policies related to programing, as well as reviewing and suggesting new policies for consideration of approval.
m. Other duties as assigned.
Aquatics (30%)
a. Oversees day to day operations of seasonal aquatics facility, including lifeguard operations, point of sale, concessions management, and program administration.
b. Plan, develop, and implement seasonal aquatics programs, swim lessons, and general pool schedules.
c. Leads and supervises seasonal aquatics employees and volunteers. Recruits, hires, trains, evaluates and disciplines as necessary.
d. Facilitates seasonal openings and closures of aquatics facilities, working closely with recreation and parks maintenance staff.
e. Works closely with department personnel to ensure safe and efficient operations of pool equipment and associated grounds.
Enrichment Programs (15%):
a. Research, plans, and implements enrichment activities, programs, and workshops for people of all ages.
b. Manages instructor and partner program contracts.
Sports/Wellness (10%):
a. Responsible for planning, scheduling, implementing and supervising youth and adult sports and wellness activities.
b. Leads and supervises recreation program staff and volunteers. Recruits, hires, trains, evaluates, and disciplines as necessary.

Youth Programs (10%):
a. Develops youth and teen programs, activities, and workshops designed to enhance the curriculum, programs, and outings, to enhance youth/teen experiences.
b. Oversees the development, implementation and supervision of out of afterschool programs, school camps, and youth enrichment activities.
Special Events (5%):
a. Assists with researching, developing, and implementing special events that enhance community and participant experience.
E. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education and Experience):
a. Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent, and five years of progressively responsible recreation programming and leisure services or
b. A degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Leisure Studies, Physical Education or closely related field and two years of progressively responsible recreation programming and leisure services
c. Certified Pool Operator license, or willingness to achieve licensure within three months of hire.
d. American Red Cross Lifeguard training certification or achieve within three months of hire.
e. Or any combination of education and equivalent experience.
F. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
a. Knowledge in planning, organizing, and implementing recreational activities, examples may include aquatics programs, youth camps and after school programs, adult programming, or wellness programs.
b. Skilled in relationship building, team leadership and management.
c. Skilled in researching programs and development thereafter.
d. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing with supervisors, department heads, city employees, employee teams and members of the public.
e. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all city employees, and the public toward the common goal of providing high quality services.
f. Ability to effectively manage multiple assignments/projects and priorities simultaneously to ensure the fulfillment of projects, tasks, and responsibilities.
g. Ability to suggest and carry out procedures to assure highest standards of risk management, employee safety and risk avoidance.
h. Skilled in computers and related software such as Microsoft office and other computer programs necessary or as assigned.
G. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
a. Must possess a valid Montana Drivers license upon date of hire.
b. History of a satisfactory driving record.
c. First Aid/CPR certified.
H. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
A variety of motor vehicles, electronic instruments, phones, calculators, computers, related software programs, hand tools and various sports equipment used in athletic programs and swimming pools.
