A. GENERAL PURPOSE:
Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the collection, transporting and disposal of solid waste materials generated within the City. Position also requires good customer service skills when assisting the public to understand City policies and effectively working with the public to resolve problems with solid waste services.
B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Note: It is expected that every employee should be on time, fully prepared, every day that the employee is scheduled to work. We expect every employee to strive for perfect attendance.
1. General Maintenance and repair (90%)
i. Performs required labor and operates a variety of equipment and tools related to the disposal of residential and commercial solid waste material within the City.
ii. Disinfects and cleans solid waste containers.
iii. Is responsible for pruning limbs, branches and shrubs obstructing City alley collection. Normally, this will be with the use of power equipment.
iv. Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools before and after use.
v. Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various materials and equipment for solid waste collection routes
vi. Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
vii. Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects individually and as part of a crew, including alley cleanup and solid waste container assembly.
viii. Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the water, sewer, street, and solid waste divisions.
ix. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
2. Peripheral duties: (10%)
i. Performs other duties as assigned including assisting other Public Works divisions and departments when necessary.
ii. Serves on various crews as assigned to support the City’s needs.
C. SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the immediate supervision of the Solid Waste Supervisor.
D. SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None generally, but may serve as a lead worker to manage the team as per contract.
E. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education and Experience):
1. Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent.
2. Previous experience relating to solid waste collection, hazardous materials recognition, and recyclable materials preferred.
3. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
F. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of safe maintenance and operation of heavy equipment used to collect, transport and dispose of solid waste and hazardous materials.
2. Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in solid waste collection.
3. Skilled in the safe and efficient operation of large commercial vehicles.
4. Knowledge of federal, state and local laws concerning handling and disposal of solid waste and hazardous materials.
5. Ability to comprehend and follow collection routes as assigned.
6. Skilled in use of various manual and powered tools.
7. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
8. Ability to handle strong odors and deal with dead animals.
9. Ability to work safely with various types of equipment, including operating large vehicles in confined areas on City streets and alleys.
10. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and occasionally deal with unfriendly customers or citizens.
11. Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays.
12. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
13. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must possess a valid State of Montana Class B Commercial Driver’s license with airbrakes at the time of hire.
2. Proof of satisfactory driving history.
G. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to: dump trucks, pickup trucks, utility trucks, solid waste rear loader and side-arm trucks, snow plows common hand and power tools, shovels, rakes, wrenches, mobile radios and telephones.
H. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

2. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.
3. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee must frequently push and pull large garbage bins on rollers weighing several 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
I. WORK ENVIRONMENT:

2. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works outside varying weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
3. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
4. Shift schedule will be rotating between varying shifts to meet the needs of the city.
i. When necessary, schedule will include overtime and rotating holiday shifts.
ii. Note: Management reserves the right to change the schedule subject to the needs of the City.
