ACCOUNTABLE TO: Fleet Manager
STATUS: Regular, full-time, union
Primary Objective of Position:
Under limited supervision, perform skilled, journey level automotive and diesel mechanical work maintaining and repairing a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

Duties are performed in surroundings where physical conditions and hazards are controllable through use of appropriate safety equipment. Must work a variety of shifts and be available for on-call after hour emergencies and be able to lift at least 50 pounds. May perform painting and body repair work requiring respiratory certification. Position is subject to drug and alcohol testing requirements of U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carriers Act.
Perform major and minor repairs of vehicles and equipment including tandem axle trucks, graders, back hoes, fork lifts, front end loaders, automobiles, generators, motorcycles and light trucks; troubleshoot and repair electrical systems; repair and replace braking systems, including air brakes, overhaul engines, transmissions and hydraulic systems, A/C and heating systems, suspension and drive train components; fabricate new equipment components and modify equipment for multiple tasks and uses.
Perform vehicle inspections, order parts and perform vehicle services; post labor and parts on work orders; perform welding tasks for vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair; perform body damage such as repair and replacement of damaged body components; repair and replace tires; test drive and operate vehicles and equipment; may be required to perform paint and body work; some positions maintain building boiler; perform all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics:
Knowledge of state and federal vehicle regulations;
Knowledge of Public Works Department policies and procedures;
Knowledge of vehicle equipment operations and repair techniques, including gasoline and diesel engines, computer systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, braking systems, fabrications, and collision repair;
Knowledge of a wide variety of vehicles and construction equipment, including heavy duty trucks, trailers, graders, loaders, back hoes, automobiles, and light trucks;
Knowledge of complex electronic, hydraulic and mechanical systems;
Knowledge of OSHA standards and guidelines;
Knowledge and ability to promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with City safety policies;
Skill in understanding and following regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines;
Skill in performing vehicle equipment repairs and maintenance;
Skill in reading and understanding repair manuals;
Skill in basic computer operation within automotive field with basic knowledge of computerized diagnostic tools such Jpro, Snap-on, Alldata, Allison, Chrysler, Ford, and GM software.
Skill in following safety guidelines and procedures;
Skill in troubleshooting and repairing complex electrical, hydraulic and mechanical equipment, vehicles and components;
Skill in using complex diagnosis equipment to troubleshoot, repair and monitoring systems and system controls;
Skill in the safe operation of vehicles, tools and equipment;
Skill in communicating, in person and in writing;
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with vendors and city employees.
Qualifications require completion of a technical training program in automotive and diesel mechanics and five years experience in light pickup, automotive and heavy equipment mechanic functions. ASE or similar mechanical certification and DOT air brake certification preferred. Must have or be able to obtain a Montana commercial driver’s license within thirty days from the date of hire.

SALARY: $24.33/hr + $2.35/hr pension contribution
