Montana’s cities and towns are always on the move and so was the League’s 94th Annual Conference! With the theme LOCAL MOMENTUM, more than 400 local leaders from across the state came together in Billings for three incredible days of learning, connection, and celebration of all the ways we keep our communities moving forward.
Kicking Things Off with Michael Punke
We started strong with an inspiring keynote from Michael Punke, best-selling author of The Revenant. Drawing on stories from the wild frontier, Michael reminded us that real progress starts with local leadership and perseverance. Everyone left energized and with a complimentary signed copy of Ridgeline (plus a chance to chat with Michael). Our appreciation goes out to the Joe Menicucci Municipal Education Program for sponsoring Michael’s impactful talk.
Breakouts, Big Ideas, and Building Connections
From affordable housing and infrastructure funding to AI in local government, emergency preparedness, and community engagement, our breakout sessions covered it all. Attendees swapped stories, shared solutions, and connected directly with state and federal partners about new programs and resources to help Montana’s cities and towns thrive.
A Huge Thank-You to Our Exhibitors and Partners
Once again, our exhibitors brought the energy and the innovation! From new tools and technologies to creative community solutions, they helped local leaders discover new ways to strengthen operations and enhance quality of life. The League extends a huge thanks to all our partners and exhibitors for their ongoing support. It’s what makes this event possible year after year.
Evening Fun in Downtown Billings
When the sessions wrapped up, the fun was just getting started. We kicked things off with the President’s Reception at the Yellowstone Art Museum that included local art, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and warm welcomes from Billings Mayor Bill Cole and League Board President Mayor Russ Nelson of Belgrade. The next night, the Historic Billings Depot came alive with live music, great food, and plenty of laughter, a true celebration of the community spirit that defines the League.
Honoring 47 Years of Service: Gus Byrom
Friday’s luncheon gave us one of the most meaningful moments of the week, celebrating Gus Byrom, recipient of the Alec Hansen Lifetime Achievement Award. Gus has spent 47 years strengthening Montana’s local governments. From his early work as a city planner in Helena and Lewis & Clark County to his 38 years with the Montana Department of Commerce. Known for his wisdom, patience, and people-first approach, Gus truly embodies LOCAL MOMENTUM, helping communities build capacity, improve infrastructure, and better serve their citizens.
Looking Ahead
From the breakout rooms to the hallway conversations, the 94th Annual Conference captured what makes Montana’s cities and towns so special: collaboration, innovation, and heart. To everyone who joined us in Billings -attendees, presenters, exhibitors, and partners - thank you for keeping Montana’s LOCAL MOMENTUM strong.
We can’t wait to see you next year for the 95th Annual Conference taking place October 7 - 9 of 2026 in Helena at the Delta Hotel.
