Reliable Legal Support for Montana’s Communities

Does your city or town need legal counsel on a permanent or as-needed basis? We’re here to help. Montana League of Cities and Towns assists our municipal members in finding qualified legal professionals, ensuring you receive efficient, effective, and reliable representation.

How the League Can Support You

The League has undergone a Request for Qualifications process to identify legal counsel throughout Montana that can meet a wide range of municipal needs, including but not limited to:

  • Governance: General counsel, meeting attendance (in-person or virtual), and ethics/conflict of interest compliance.
  • Documentation: Drafting and reviewing ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other agreements.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Navigating public records, open meeting laws, and political advocacy regulations.
  • Land Use: Planning, zoning, subdivision, and code enforcement.
  • Labor & Litigation: Employment law, collective bargaining, and representation in criminal, civil, or appellate litigation.
  • Finance & Risk: Risk management, liability assessment, and real estate or bond transactions.
How It Works

Starting the process is simple. Once you submit our intake form, we handle the matching process for you at no cost:

  1. Tell us your needs: Identify your legal issue, current attorney status, and estimated budget.
  2. Get Matched: The League will provide one to three qualified firms or attorneys that best fit your needs, based on experience, location, and cost.
  3. Choose Your Counsel: Your municipality can then enter into an agreement with any one of the matched providers. There is no obligation to enter into a contract with any of the matched providers; your municipality can choose someone else entirely. The process is intended to help you find a qualified attorney faster and easier.
What to Expect After Matching

Once you receive your matches (we will strive to provide match recommendations within five business days), the final selection process is in your hands:

  • Review Your Matches: The League will provide one to three qualified firms or attorneys curated specifically for your request based on experience, location, and subject matter.
  • Direct Engagement: Your municipality may choose to enter into legal services directly with any of the matched providers at your own discretion.
  • Flexible Agreements: You have the freedom to negotiate and enter into separate agreements tailored to your specific needs.
  • No Obligation: Using this matching service is a benefit of your League membership, but it is never a requirement. You are always free to seek legal services through other channels.
